Is Blu-Ray Just More Planned Obsolescence
By C R Ellsworth

Planned obsolescence, or built-in obsolescence if you are in the UK, is the decision by a manufacturer to purposely design, manufacture and distribute a consumer product to become obsolete or non-functional specifically to force the customer to buy the next generation of the product. This plan will be implemented before the ‘Next Generation’ is even off the drawing board. Planned obsolescence is of course, very beneficial for a manufacturer because it means a customer can’t just buy a product once and have it last for many years thereby never having to buy again - the life of the product’s usefulness or functionality is fixed, so that at regular intervals the customer must pay money again and again, and yet again to either the original manufacturer for newer junk, or buy from the competition who probably also uses planned obsolescence.

I can’t believe we are still using motors and movable parts that wear out. The technological advances of the last few years have led to media that can hold Giga bytes of data in volatile and non volatile storage with no moving parts.

So, does BluRay fit into this scenario? That remains to be seen because the new technology is so fresh.

The most intense competition in the next-gen optical video disc format wars is between HD-DVDs and Blu-ray. Blu-ray is backed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, of which Sony is a member.

Is this just a case of ‘The Newest Toy’ or ‘Grass is Greener’? …

The NPD Group: Consumer Awareness of Blu-ray Rising (but still less than half of HDTV owners)

According to The NPD Group, a leading market research company, 45 percent of HDTV owners in the U.S. now claim to be familiar with Blu-ray Disc (BD), up from 35 percent in June 2007. And, while only 6 percent of all consumers surveyed said they plan to purchase a BD device, NPD found purchase intent to be higher among the growing population of HDTV owners, boding well for the future of the format.

Nevertheless, manufacturers still face challenges. Although HD-DVD is no longer a competitive threat, many consumers are content with standard-definition DVD players and content. The leading reasons cited as barriers to purchase were…

Plasma vs LCD TV? A HDTV Buyers guide

plasma vs lcd tv australia

The wide screen TV market has become so competitive that even full high definition (HD) plasma or LCD 1080p TVs are now selling for a fraction of what they were just a year or two ago.

LCD displays continue to improve, although the best plasma TVs offer a higher contrast ratio. This means a bigger colour range between black and white, delivering the most lifelike images. However LCD TVs typically consume half the power of a similarly sized plasma, so your decision may well end up being based on thoughts of your power bill as much as image quality.

Check the display signal
Some stores only show standard definition (SD) video on their display TVs. This is plain stupid because it doesn’t allow you to see how the TVs display HDTV or Blu-ray video, which makes choosing on quality all but impossible. SD quality is important, but if you are buying a 1080p TV, viewing 1080p content is a must.

The Video Game Disease

I used to play video games a great deal. More truthfully, it could be argued that I was an addict. Having said that, it wasn’t long until I realized that after a little time of playing games for video, my power to think about on real-world problems had become afflicted to a worrying degree. Even worse, I also found out that I was a lot more bad-tempered and tended to be much more militant when dealing with others. Strangely, this didn’t seem connected to the kind of game on video I was playing, more precisely, playing my non violent games on video didn’t decrease my aggressiveness.

Another noticeable symptom of wasting my valuable time on games on video was that after having played for a certain length of time, quite often I would end up feeling weary and lethargic when I had completed a gaming session.

The symptom that concerned me most however, was the ongoing urge to play more video games. I began to seewhat being an addict feels like. I am positive that the games for video I played had taken an intense grasp on me to a possibly devastating degree. The situation affected my family, my job and my circle of friends. On reflection, It is hard to understand how awful my life had become. It was my good fortune then, I have a tolerant and compassionate other half who gave me a great deal of help in working out my difficulties and I came out the other side a more resilient and rational person.

I’m still a video gamer but, after setting myself a rulebook and ensuring that I adhere to them, I’m now a blissful, gamer.

I firmly believe that people who matter, such as psychiatrists, family, other halves, teachers etc., need to start instigating some positive action to understand and take action against, the most deceptive effects of gaming in order to stop this ever-worsening problem from becoming a widespread epidemic.

Video games are an excellent form of pleasure but need to be used with a degree of responsiblity. Go to New Xbox Games to find tips and ideas on how you can play safely as well as get some great gaming bargains.
